    An Ireland of Financial Apartheid
    Women: Carers and Bearers

Clondalkin Women’s Network Wants Your Story. How is the recession affecting women? Women traditionally are the family carers - but equally so the bearers, and survivor solution -seekers in family tough times. Let us hear your stories of how this recession is changing your life and that of your family – we like most women’s organisations are seeking to document women’s experiences. Please phone, write, e-mail or drop- in to let us hear your stories.

Clondalkin Women’s Network supports the campaigns of the National Women’s Council of Ireland, ‘The Poor Cant Pay’, the Equality Rights Alliance and SIPTU. The poor and most vulnerable in our communities -many women and children – must be protected. We must demand what a leading Trade Unionist recently called “standards of decency” from our politicians. Is it an acceptable standard of decency to take from those least able to give? Taking from people living in poverty is literally taking food from mouths, heat from homes, warm clothes & shoes from growing children, opportunities for education, opportunities for medical care and attention. Are these not universal basic human rights? How too are families to be protected from home loss? How are disadvantaged communities to be protected? So many ‘hows?’ . . . .

A demonstration is being held on Wednesday 30th September to provide evidence of support, belief and valuing of People, Communities and Community Work. 1 pm , Parnell Square, Dublin.

    Clondalkin Women’s Network asks:
"What will be the costs and outcomes to our society if an Ireland of Financial Apartheid is further progressed?"

National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI)
    PRESS STATEMENT, July 16, 2009
Bord Snip Nua Slashes Women’s Equality

The disastrous cuts to women’s equality programmes proposed in the Report of the Special Group on Public Service Numbers and Expenditure Programmes would wreck hard won advances in the fight for women’s equality and would be particularly devastating for women living in poor and marginalised communities throughout the country, say the National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI). Cuts of 19%, 44% and 100% to programmes designed to address women’s inequality, tackle violence against women, alleviate poverty and build communities, have been proposed in the Report. These programmes have already suffered substantial cuts to their funds. The NWCI represents over 150 women’s groups around the country.

“We call on Government to place women, families and the development of communities at the core of all social and economic policy” said Susan Mc Kay, Director of the NWCI. “We appreciate the need for realistic and well thought out approaches to cost saving at this difficult time. However, targeting the most marginalised, slashing women’s equality programmes and paralyzing national representative bodies, will do irreparable social damage at a time when community solidarity is essential for national recovery,” she said.

    National Survey
    Women's Right To Health

Does the Government fulfil its responsibility to provide you with a Health Service that meets your Right to Health?

The Irish Government will report to the United Nations this year on how it meets its citizens Economic, Social and Cultural Human Rights.

The Women’s Human Rights Alliance will write a Shadow Report on the Right to Health. A National Survey will be conducted in June to collect women’s experiences and to make recommendations for the health service. It’s an alternative to the “official version” written by the Irish Government. We can bring the survey to your group if this suits. Call Wendy at 4670748.

Please support this important Shadow Report.

     Women In The World

    ACTION ALERT: September 22, 2009

URGENT ACTION NEEDED! DEMOCRACY UNDER ATTACK IN HONDURAS! PEOPLE BEING ROUNDED UP IN STADIUMS, THE BRAZILIAN EMBASSY IS UNDER SIEGE!

Please write immediately to the UN missions members of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, from Canada, United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and others, IMMEDIATELY. The contact information for all the listed missions is below the sample letter.

Demand that the United Nations immediately impose an economic blockaid on Honduras, a demand of the National Front of Resistance to the Coup against Honduras. The United Nations initiated a session today.

Honduran President Manuel Zelaya yesterday arrived in Honduras, and is in the Brazilian Embassy. The defacto government is attacking protesters who have gathered around the Brazilian Embassy to protect the constitutionally elected President Manuel Zelaya. Dangerous quantities of tear gas are being used around the Brazilian embassy at a level that puts in danger the lives of the Brazilian diplomatic corps, President Zelaya, and neighbors of the Embassy.

According to radio reports in Honduras, protesters are being rounded up and held in stadiums. Live ammunition has been used against protesters along with extreme beatings. Masked men accompany police and military. Deaths of protesters are rumored. The offices of leading Honduran human rights organization COFADEH was attacked with tear gas. A curfew is in effect and scheduled to begin at 4 pm, and extreme repression during the curfew is expected.

Over the past 88 days the Resistance Front has maintained constant protests of thousands of protester daily.

    SAMPLE LETTER

    Esteemed Ambassador:

I write to request that in your capacity as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council you propose a resolution to obligate members of the United Nations to impose a trade bock aid against Honduras. In this way the non recognition of the de facto regime that came to power through a military coup on June 28, 2009 will be made effective.

For this reason it is urgent that an economic blockaid be imposed and that the possibility of a peace keeping mission be discussed.

    Sincerely,

United Nations Missions in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations

    TESTIMONIOS / EYE WITNESS ACCOUNTS:

    Amigas, amigos:
